Benteke
From today's Times:

West Ham United are interested in signing Christian Benteke to spearhead their attack next season but Liverpool would have to contribute towards the Belgium striker’s £120,000-a-week wages.
The east London club are unlikely to be willing to offer him more than £80,000 a week, a similar figure to the amount paid to Andy Carroll, their England striker. West Ham’s other option is Michy Batshuayi, the Marseilles and Belgium striker who is also wanted by Tottenham Hotspur.
Benteke’s future is in question after starting two of Liverpool’s past 12 games as he continues to struggle to adapt to a different style of football under Jürgen Klopp, his new manager who has challenged him to find an answer to his slump in form. He was left out of the Liverpool side who beat Manchester United 2-0 in the first leg of their Europa League round-of-16 tie last Thursday.
The 25-year-old was the second most expensive signing in the club’s history at £32.5 million and was expected to provide the firepower that Liverpool have lacked since the departure of Luis Suárez to Barcelona in 2014. Benteke, however, is behind Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi in the pecking order and has been warned by Marc Wilmots, the Belgium head coach, that his place at this summer’s European Championship finals in France is not guaranteed.
West Ham plan to sign up to five players for next season as they move to the Olympic Stadium. The club will exercise an option to agree a permanent deal to sign Manuel Lanzini from Al Jazira for about £5 million and the forward is likely to agree a five-year deal. They also expect to announce a deal for Havard Nordtveit, the former Arsenal defender who will be a free agent when his contract at Borussia Mönchengladbach ends this summer.

Re: Benteke
At 20m transfer and 80k per week(assuming pool eat part of his 120/wk), he would be more expensive than Carroll, and he's injury prone.

I just don't see any reason to change our recruitment strategy from what it's been and take a risk like this for someone who hasn't shown he's capable of playing at an elite level. Maybe we're not at an elite level yet, but that's the direction we want to move right? What we currently have on offer is at least mid-table quality, so this would be an expensive lateral move.

Re: Benteke
Agree about Emineke- seems a real hard worker, but I'm not sure he's got the quality we need, especially seen as we seem to need our back up strikers way, way more than we'd like.

Re: Benteke
Some good points

I personally would keep Valencia as he can play forward and out wide.

Send Moses back to Chelsea and purchase a good wide man, someone like Tore.

I would spend big on a world class striker (not Benteke) that Belgian at Marsille sounds good.

I would release Song, bring back Samuelson and nurcher him and Oxford in to the position that Song takes up?

Release Job and get in a good number 2 left back for Cresswell.

Keep Carroll, Sakho and Valencia but send EE back.

Apart from 2nd left back , every purchase should be a player that is good enough to start.

Re: Benteke
I'd be really wary of taking him on on high wages given his performances for Liverpool. I know you don't become a bad player overnight, but it could have wrecked his confidence in himself.

Re: Benteke
Oops, forgot that Batshuayi will probably want to get paid as well! :)

So might be a squeeze on wages, do we have a bit more space for wages next season?

Re: Benteke
if we could sell Valencia for £10m and get in Benteke for £20m I think that would be an excellent upgrade for a net spend of £10m. I'd also not renew Eminke and still go all out to get Batshuyai for around £25m

Forward options of Batshuyai, Sakho, Benteke and Carroll would be immense.

Make Lanzini permanent for around £8m, get in a replacement for Song (that Norwegian bloke on a free?) and £15m on a replacement for Moses. Keep hold of the rest and that would be an immense window with a net spend of around £58m which should be doable with the new TV money?

As for wages Valencia and Eminkie should cover Benteke, Lanzini is already on the payroll, the Norwegian would probably be on less than song and the Moses replacement like for like.

Let him go back to Villa.

Re: Benteke
Not worth 20m imo.

I'd look elsewhere. I think we need someone up front who has a bit of skill and flair. A better version of Sakho, basically. Benteke isn't that sort.

Re: Benteke
A realistic target for us. Still young and on his day a top top player. IF he is available for around 20 mill I would say yes.

I love the logic of Ron. If that worked, any team that won the league couldn't buy another player.
How about Antonio and Cresswell, Ron?

Why would we want anyone from a team below us in the table?

You wouldn't take Lukaku then Ronnie?

Re: Benteke
Not sure I would want another second choice striker at 80 bags a week. Rather go after the marseille playerfor a potential rival to sakho plus we could fuck spurs of in the process and drench players have been good to us as of late

Re: Benteke
nordveit and ogbonna can cover there, i would imagine that as antonio has also played on the left in his career he could also if needs be. but i agree that unless we have a good youngster coming through on the bench then we may need a hendrie replacement. tbh i dont think its whether he is good enough or not but that he cant dislodge cresswell so may want to move to play regularly.
